If we were villains, would we know?

Would the lines blur so seamlessly between good intentions and selfish desires that we’d miss the moment we became the antagonist in someone else’s story?

Sometimes, we wear the mask of righteousness, believing our choices are noble, our actions justifiable. But underneath, there’s a crack — a faint whisper that wonders if we’re wrong. Perhaps we made that sharp comment, not in the name of honesty, but to wound. Perhaps we walked away, not because we had no choice, but because staying required too much of our pride.

And yet, who among us hasn’t?

Villainy isn’t born in a grand declaration of malice. It grows quietly, nurtured by the small betrayals we tell ourselves are harmless. We turn away from the friend who needed us most, choosing convenience over care. We close our hearts to love because vulnerability feels like a battle we’re too tired to fight.

We don’t set out to hurt others, but sometimes, in protecting our own fragile hearts, we build walls too high, too thick. Those walls keep the world out, but they also keep us in. Alone.

If we were villains, would it matter?

To some, we are already cast as the antagonist. The friend who didn’t call, the lover who didn’t…
